Ankylosing Spondylitis, or AS, as it is commonly referred to, is a type of arthritis. It is a disease mostly seen in young men between the ages of 16 to 35. Females can be afflicted but their symptoms are typically mild. It can also appear in children, mostly male, but it is hardly ever seen in African Americans. It causes morning stiffness and back pain, which lying down or sitting, only worsens. It can cause pain on inhalation, fatigue, and weight loss.

AS is caused by inflammation to the tendons and ligaments that make back movement possible. The body’s response to this inflammation is to produce more bone, which in turn, causes the bones of the spine to weld together. Because the spine is unable to move, it bends forward from the weight of the head.

In the early stages, AS begins in the lower back. In later stages, the middle and upper back are involved. It can afflict the joints and tendons of the buttocks, thighs, and chest. The shoulders, knees, and ankles can also be involved.

Scientists feel the the culprit behind AS is a gene, HLA-B27, which fights infection and is activated for some reason. This does not mean that everyone who has the gene will get the disease, it needs to be switched on first. They are also investigating whether the culprit might be a certain type of infection. If this were the case, antibiotics might prove to be a useful tool for this type of disease.

Early detection and treatment can help prevent deformity and reduce pain. Anti-inflammatories are often prescribed as well as exercise to improve posture and increase strength. AS patients are often told to sleep on their backs to prevent further curvature of the spine.

As long as ankylosing spondylitis is in the initial stage, that is before fusion has taken place, homeopathy has successfully treated cases of this disease.

Greg Marsh asked:

small-ankylosing-spondy1Ankylosing spondylitis is a condition that a fraction of the population faces. It is a type of arthritis that affects the spinal column and can be one of the most debilitating of all types of arthritis. In this condition, you will experience stiffness and pain. Generally, that pain runs from your neck down into your lower back. The worst part about this condition is that it often ends up causing your vertebrae, or the bones in your spine, to fuse together. That can cause many problems for you in virtually every function of your life.

What you need to know about ankylosing spondylitis is that if the condition is caught and treated soon enough, your pain will be lessened and the conditions worst debilitating abilities will be lessened, considerably. With the help of medications, physical therapy and screening, you can reduce your pain. If you don’t seek out the help you need for this condition, the worst possibility you can face is having a stooped over spine that can lead to the inability to function and do the things you need to do.

Do You Have It?

With the help of your doctor you can determine if you have ankylosing spondylitis. He or she will perform a series of tests that often include x-rays, a monitoring of your symptoms and a physical exam. Through these things, your doctor will be able to determine what is affecting you as well as the degree and the possible treatment for it. The symptoms of this form of arthritis are quite unique. One of them is the fusion of your vertebrae. What happens is as simple as your body doing too much to help itself. As with arthritis, an inflammation starts, it causes your body to trigger a healing device. In this case, it thinks that you need to heal your bones and therefore begins to stimulate bone growth. The problem with that is that the bony growth is actually fusing the two vertebrae together which leads you to additional problems.

Not only will this cause a loss of range of motion, but in addition, it will make it harder for you to breathe because your ribs are being forced in against your lungs. You may not be able to take in a deep breathe.

There are other symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis as well. The pain and stiffness that is generally accompanied by any form of arthritis are there. This can happen from the lower back, into your hips and into the buttocks. If you have pain that is constant in the hips and lower back area for more than three months, then it is a sign that you could be developing this condition. In addition, the ligaments and tendons in your spinal area on down into the back and hips can be effected and may be sore and stiff.

With the right help, though, most of the symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis can be lessened and even reversed. But, for this to happen, you have to be proactive in getting the help you need to make it so.

Ankylosing spondylitis can be successfully treated with homeopathy, provided help is sought before fusion of the joints take place. This disorder starts usually in the teenage years, or early twenties, both sexes can be affected, but it is more common and severe  in males.
Apart from homeopathic treatment, changes in the diet will need to be implemeted, as well as the addition of suitable supplements, according to the individual requirements.

Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory joint disease, characterized by stiffening and fusion of the spine and sacroiliac joints. The sacroiliac and girdle joints are more likely to be affected to a greater degree than the peripheral joints, however, ankylosing spondylitis in females more often affects the peripheral joints of the appendicular system (shoulder, upper extremities, pelvis, lower extremities), rather than the axial skeleton (skull, vertebral column).

The progress and severity of the disease differs between the sexes, with males experiencing a more rapid progress of the disease, with greater severity, and more obvious deformity than the female, in most cases.

The onset of ankolysing spondylitis usually develops in the late teens and peaks at age twenty.

The most common signs and symptoms of the onset of ankylosing spondylitis are low back pain and stiffness. The pain may be mild and infrequent at first, gradually becoming persistent, mostly worse after prolonged rest, and better after exercise.Sitting up or twisting the spine becomes increasingly difficult.

Progression of the disease becomes apparent when the normal curvature of the lower spine is lost, and concavity of the upper spine increases, and so the person becomes increasingly stooped, (bamboo spine).

Like rheumatoid arthritis, it’s an inflammatory systemic disease, cause unknown, with no medical cure, its only treatment being with anti -inflammatory drugs, and analgesic medication, neither of which halt the progression of the disease, sometimes surgery is used.

Avoiding deformity and maintaining mobility requires a program of continuous exercise, which may be repeated a number of times during the day, and repeated forever after. These exercises are important in order to maintain chest expansion, full extension of the spine, and complete range of motion in proximal joints.

Exactly what causes the spine to become rigid is firstly the initial inflammatory process which occurs in the fibrous tissue of the joint capsule, the cartilage that surrounds the intervertebral discs, entheses, and periosteum.

This inflammatory process erodes bone, and cartilage in joints, it’s the repair process which causes the disability. The scar tissue is replaced by calcification, and ossification which then causes the joints to fuse and lose flexibility.

Alternative Medical Treatments

Chinese medicine would look at this disease as being a wind damp condition, either  wind-cold, or wind-hot.The wind-cold condition is treated with warming medicines, such as ginger root, angelica root, cinnamon, while the wind-hot condition is treated with gentian root , cork tree bark, or acupuncture.

It seems that arthritis is not as common in China as it is in the West, this is attributed to the fact that they have a much more active lifestyle, and generally have a better diet than their Western counterparts.

There are a number of herbs which can be used to treat arthritis , apart from ginger which has already been mentioned .However, it would be best to have the advice of a herbalist on this matter, for some herbs may not be compatible with any medication which the person may be taking. Moreover, the herbalist has the skill and knowledge to be able to choose appropriate herbs for the individual patient, it’s not necessarily a case of one size fits all. Relatively safe herbs to take would be nettle, meadowsweet, and devil’s claw.

An homeopath would treat this with a well chosen remedy, after a lengthy case had been taken, and a positive result could be expected depending on how far advanced the disease was.Unfortuately people often seek the services of a alternative medical practitioner as a last resort, rather than investigating their options in the initial stage of their disease.Considering this disease from a non classical homeopathic point of view Dr Parimal Banerji of Calcutta has treated successfully many cases of ankylosing spondylitis with Calcarea carbonica 200c, that is as long as the disease is in it’s initial stages.

The diet for a person with arthritis should consist of fresh organic vegetables, and fruit, very limited quantities of meat and other proteins, better not at all, eliminate sugar and refined products, alcohol, salt, and avoid foods high in oxalic acid, such as spinach, rhubarb, cranberry, and plums. Vegetables from the nightshade family could be a problem for some, tomatoes, eggplant, bell peppers, and potatoes. Eliminate saturated fats, sugar substitutes and all fast foods and refined products.

Add to your diet one of these oils, flaxseed, borage , evening primrose or hemp oil ,all contain GLA, and it’s the anti-inflammatory properties of these oils which are needed for your condition. Wheat and barley grass would be healthy additions to the diet, and persons with arthritis would benefit greatly from a regular intake of both of these grasses. They are a rich source of vitamins, and minerals, wheatgrass has powerful antiinflammatory properties, and greatly assists the reduction of pain and swelling.

Tissue salts for arthritis would be Silica, which would be used as a calcium reorganizer, calcium fluoride to break down nodosities, sodium phosphate to rid the system of the build up of metabolic acid, magnesium phos to relieve pain, ferrum phos to relieve inflammation, potassium chloride to relieve congestion, and swelling.  Far better to visit a naturopath rather than self treating the disease, if tissue salts are appropriate suitable ones will be chosen.

Acceptance of your disease as incurable may be even more destructive than the drugs you are taking to relieve the condition. Surely the better option would be to look further than your nose for a healthy outcome, a simple dietary change may be all that is needed to convince you that arthritis can be relieved in some cases by very simple natural measures.
