‘Basis’ means foundation, and this word is the root for ‘basic’. The properties of alkalinity and acidity are referred to by ‘Basic’. The cells that constitute these foods determine these conditions. So, the change from alkaline to acid cannot be done by external treatment. Foods are alkaline or acidic at their foundation, or base.

Chemically, alkaline and acidic substances are opposites. Whenever there is an interaction between an acid and a base, a salt results. For general reference, the ‘normal’ pH of human saliva is between 7.3 and 7.4. However, most people have lesser pH as they are more acidic. They are tired, burned out and their bodies starve for balance. Muscles are fatigued easily under the control of acidic foods. You are forced to slow down literally, as your body is not able to produce the same results as before physically.

When you eat acidic foods, free radical oxidation results, and this causes ageing. Minerals and vitamins are not readily absorbed. The digestive system is put off balance as friendly bacteria die. Further, the intestine’s functions are hampered due to the acidity as nutrients are not absorbed so easily. Cells become saturated with toxins which cannot be removed. The majority of the systems in the body cannot function in full capacity.

In contrast, alkaline foods are more beneficial to your health. Consuming such foods is more beneficial. They have anti-oxidant effects on the body. The assimilation at cellular levels are improved and they help the cells to perform normally. The yeast and parasitic growth is reduced due to these foods. Alkaline foods facilitate more restful and deeper sleep, better and youthful skin, and help in relieving suffering from colds, flu and headaches. These foods also promote copious physical energy.

The relationship to cancer is an important difference between acidic and alkaline foods. Healthy tissues are alkalline, while cancerous tissues are acidic. When oxygen combines with an acidic fluid, it forms water due to combination with hydrogen ions. Though oxygen helps to neutralise the acid, the acid does not allow oxygen to reach the tissues. But, as oxygen gas enters an alkaline solution, it combines with hydroxyl ions to form one oxygen atom and one water molecule. The lone oxygen atom is open to move to another cell and extend the merits of oxygen to the other cells in the tissue. At a pH of over 7.4, cancer tissues become dormant. Studies have shown that, at pH 8.5, healthy tissues live, while cancerous tissues die.
