Montmorency tart cherries are a rich source of melatonin. This discovery was made at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. Dr. Russel Reiter, who has been studying melatonin for more than 30 years, headed up the research team. “Tart cherries, specifically the Montmorency variety, contain an extremely significant quantity of melatonin, enough to produce positive results in the body,” says Dr. Reiter.

Melatonin, originally discovered as a hormone of the pineal gland, is also produced in other organs and represents, a normal food constituent found in yeast and plant material, which can influence the level in the circulation. The gastrointestinal tract contains several hundred times more melatonin than the pineal gland found at the base of the brain, the melatonin in the GI tract can be released into the blood in response to food intake and stimuli by nutrients, especially tryptophan.
