Another disaster from a Cox 2 inhibitor (NSAID)

Over 60,000 people in Australia take Prexige for pain related conditions such as osteoarthritis, post operative pain, and dysmenorrhea to name but a few. Although the TGA first approved Prexige in 2004, its regular use has been on the increase since it was added to the Pharmaceutical Benefits scheme.

Two deaths and 2 cases of liver failure requiring transplants related to the use of Prexige may seem an insignificant number, compared to the large number who take it, but there may be many more unreported deaths related to its use.

The possible side effects from regular daily use of the recommended dose of 100mg Prexige are considerable, the dose in Australia was much higher at 200mg, and in some instances 400mg. Perhaps the deaths in Australia were directly related to the much higher prescribed dose, for the 100 mg dose does not appear to have caused such problems.

The TGA is now warning those who have taken Prexige over a long period to check with their doctor for liver function tests.

Some of the possible side effects from the 100mg dose include constipation, cough, diarrhea, headaches, infections, nausea, fatigue, vomiting, blurred vision, chest pain, depression, cystitis, heart attack, palpitations, stroke, sleeping problems, kidney problems, liver problems, and the list goes on, and this is from the recommended dose of 100 mgs.

Much has been written about the effects of diet on arthritis, some recommend extreme measures which may not necessarily be in the health interests of the person with arthritis. Vegan diets require an in depth knowledge of nutrition in order to maintain one’s health, and even then a strict diet such as this may need supplements in order to replace the deficiencies in the diet.

A well balanced diet for an arthritis sufferer would consist of mainly fresh organic green leafy vegetables, loads of organic fruit, some whole grains, some eggs, some protein, not red meat but small serves of free range organic poultry would be fine. Also and most importantly essential fatty acids, these include, cod liver oil, organic flaxseed meal and oil, hemp oil, hemp meal, and evening primrose oil.

Taking an oil high in Omega-3, such as flax seed oil, can cause an imbalance in Omega-6, this may be difficult to achieve in a typical Western diet which is usually disproportionately high in Omega-6s . Hemp seed oil or meal provides the perfect balance of essential fatty acids, hemp seed meal is by far the better choice, due to the instability of the oil in heat and light.

Wheatgrass is rich in chlorophyl which is anti-bacterial, capable of neutralizing toxins in the body, cleansing the liver, and most importantly for those of you who may have been on medications, it eliminates drug deposits from the body.

It is cheap and easy to grow, all you need are a couple of large seed trays filled with soil, obtained from an uncontaminated source, plant the organic wheat seeds, and in a few weeks you will have a couple of trays of lush green wheat grass. You will need a special wheatgrass juicer to extract the juice, the juice is not properly extracted in a normal juice extractor.

When you start on wheatgrass juice it is best to start with a 1 oz shot for it is a rather rich sickly taste, and some may find it a bit nauseating. If this is the case have a smaller dose, or break it down with some organic carrot juice.

The anti-inflammatory action of wheat grass will benefit people with arthritis, it’s antioxidants eliminate free radicals, it stimulates the renewal of DNA and RNA, and its muco-polysaccharides stimulate the repair and replacement of damaged cells.
